San Juan del Sur
San Juan del Sur (population about 5500) is a fishing village with a lot of tourist facilities.
It's situated on a pretty horseshoe-shaped cove with low mountains rising around it.
In the 19th century the town was important as the terminus of the Cornelius Vanderbilt s transport company.
Steamboats brought passengers from east coast
US ports via the Rio San Juan to the Lago de Nicaragua; they then travelled 20 km by coach to the port of San Juan del Sur.
From here, boats took them on to California.
Today San Juan is a leading beach town, but still is quiet during the weeks.
During the Semana Santa (the week before Eastern) and between Cristmas Eve
and New Years Day it is packed. During the weekends, Nicaraguans from Managua and
nearby towns como to enjoy the beach and restaurants. From real estate perspective it's an interesting area:
US and Europe retirees and investors are buying and developing land and are giving SJdS a more and more international atmosphere.
